Accompanied by 2 handwritten letters hand-inked and signed by Hewlett.

1st letter addressed to William Morris Colles (1855–1926), founder of the Authors' Syndicate and Hewlett's literay agent. Hewlett writes to Colles regarding payment rates for his articles in periodicals (The English Review, The Fortnightly Review, and Scribner's), discussing prices (£30–£35) and forwarding contact details via his brother's home in Maidstone.:

"25. Oct. 1912

Dear Mr Colles, (1) I haven’t made any rate with The English Review for any of these articles, but I’m inclined to think I got something about £30. Please observe that The Fortnightly has an article of mine for January and is therefore cut out of the list. (2). I should say that £35 would be near a magazine might pay for one of these things. I don’t know my brother’s address in America, which is accepted by Scribner. But "Addington, Maidstone," will always ultimately find him – my brother’s house.

2nd letter:

"Dear Mr Colles,

I am very sorry to hear of your serious trouble, and beg you to accept my sympathy. It is one of those blows which no words from friends or acquaintance can soften, but I feel that our business-relationship has been long enough to warrant a word or two, which I hope you won’t think an impertinence.

I sent Metropolitan proofs a long time ago.

The English Review has short stories. I may have some for you before long.

Some shelf and edge wear, bumped corners, with volume slightly cocked. Former owner's 1898 inscription to first blank, some foxing particularly to the title pages, otherwise clean. Signature of pages 161-176 partly loose.
