Johannes Gutenberg
THE GUTENBERG BIBLE
BIBLIA SACRA
Paterson, New Jersey, and New York: Pageant Books Inc, 1961. Limited edition of 1000. Unnumbered.
Large, heavy folio volumes complete in original clamshell cases. Only the second complete facsimile of the Gutenberg Bible, and the first American.
183/8 x 121/2 inches
Rare 1961 Pageant Books facsimile of the Biblia Sacra—frequently referred to as the "Cooper Square Facsimile"—is a magnificent, two-volume large folio set that represents the very first Gutenberg facsimile printed in the United States. The meticulous reproduction derives directly from the landmark German Insel Verlag facsimile, which captured the exceptional beauty of the original 42-line Gutenberg Bible copies held in the Königliche Bibliothek in Berlin and the Ständische Landesbibliothek in Fulda. Crafted using specially manufactured 100% cotton rag paper, the main text pages were masterfully printed via lithography, while the ornate color illuminations and intricate rubrication were faithfully reproduced using an intensive, multi-pass sheet-fed gravure process that ran the color pages through the press seven separate times to perfectly replicate the rich depth of the original hand-painted art. A magnificent work.
Clamshells cases show moderate rubbing and wear with small tear to cloth to corner edge of case for volume 1. Both volumes are in fine condition save for a small chip to the upper edge of 1 leaf (see photos...Likely a flaw at the time of printing). Otherwise are tight, clean and in beautiful condition.
NOTE: Due to the size and weight of the volumes, the volumes will likely be shipped in separate boxes.
