Carved into a live mountain by Lukas Ahorn in 1820-21 commemorating the Swiss Guards who were massacred in 1792 during the French Revolution, when revolutionaries stormed the Tuileries Palace in Paris.
Often carved as souvenirs, there are examples of varying ages and quality on the market. This carving is of exceptional, fine quality with a nice patina and a 19th century label verso.
